Headaches
Headaches are pain perceived anywhere in the region of the head or neck.
There are many different causes and many different types of headaches that
affect different areas of the head and neck.
The brain tissue itself is not sensitive to pain because it lacks pain
receptors. Pain is caused by disturbance of the pain-sensitive structures around
the brain. Areas of the head and neck that have these pain-sensitive structures
include the cranium (skull), muscles, ligaments, nerves, arteries and veins,
subcutaneous tissues, eyes, ears, sinuses and mucous membranes.
When the normal function of these structures is interfered with, pain can be
perceived in the form of a headache, varying from a migraine to a tension
headache with varied intensities.
Chiropractic adjustments remove the disturbance of the involved pain-sensitive
structures by relieving tension due to vertebral and soft tissue misalignments,
pressure due to inflammation or altered blood flow.
